Gardens by the Bay is a 60 acre (105 hectares) outdoor park in central Singapore, near the Marina Reservoir. It has several interesting botanical attractions to visit, including the Supertree Grove, two large, air conditioned conservatories, and more than 200 outdoor and indoor sculptures throughout the park.
The Supertree Grove dominates the center section of the park. Supertrees are tree-like structures with heights between 82 ft (25 meters) and 160 ft (50 meters). The Supertrees are home to unique and exotic ferns, vines, orchids and also a vast collection of bromeliads, among other plants. The Supertrees also include photovoltaic cells to collect solar energy for the park; rainwater collectors for use in irrigation and fountain displays; and air intake and exhaust functions as part of the park’s cooling systems.
The highlights of the Supertree Grove are an elevated walkway, an observatory, and a nightly light and music show. The walkway is 420 ft above ground (128 meters), and suspended more than 70 feet (22 meters) above ground between two of the Supertrees. The Supertree Observatory is in the tallest Supertree (165 ft or 50 meters), and houses both an Observatory and an Open-Air Rooftop Deck. The Observatory is reached via elevator and the Rooftop Deck is reached by stairs from the Observatory.
The conservatories include the Flower Dome and the Cloud Forest. The Flower Dome is the largest greenhouse in the world at 3.0 acres (1.2 hectares) and is designed to maintain a cool-dry mediterranean climate. This climate is ideal for the display of a large flower field and and eight themed gardens, including The Baobabs, Succulent Garden, Australian Garden, South African Garden, South American Garden, Olive Grove, California Garden and the Mediterranean Garden.
The Cloud Forest is slightly smaller at 2.0 acres (0.8 hectares), but is taller to allow space for the 138 ft (42-metre) tall “Cloud Mountain”. The Cloud Forest replicates the cool moist conditions found in tropical mountain regions between 3,300 ft (1,000 meters) and 9,800 ft (3,000 meters) above sea level, found in South-East Asia, Central- and South America. Visitors are whisked to the top of the Cloud Mountain by an elevator, and then wind their way down by a circular path, crossing waterfall several times.
Gardens by the Sea is also amazing just to walk through. The gardens are bordered on the North by Marina Bay, and on the West by Dragonfly Lake.
At various points in the park you can see amazing views of other Singapore attractions like the Singapore Sands Hotel and it’s observation deck,
and the Singapore Eye ferris wheel.
