Torres del Paine National Park in the Chile portion of Patagonia is one of the most amazing places I’ve ever visited and photographed. The park is an incredible combination of sweeping plains, abundant lakes and rivers, rough and gnarled trees and undergrowth, and towering mountain peaks that look so close you could touch them.

I was lucky to spend a week in Torres del Paine in April, during the fall season. The already interesting trees were turning amazing colors of red and orange, and we were even lucky to have an early snowstorm on the peaks during our visit.

Here are ten of my favorite photo spots from the tour, in no particular order. Honestly they are each spectacular in their own way, and the variety certainly added to the experience.

(1) Mirador Lago Toro (Lago Toro Overlook) offers breathtaking views of the Paine Massif, including the iconic three granite towers, and the vast expanse of Lago Toro. Lago del Toro is the largest lake in the Torres del Paine National Park and many visitors to the national park drive along its shore as they first catch sight of the park’s most famous peaks, the Torres (Towers) and the Cuernos (Horns). The Rio Serrano flows from the north west corner of the lake.

(2) Mirador los Cuernos (Overlook of the Horns) is located at the end of a short trail starting at . The hike to the Mirador is an easy 4 mile (6.5 kilometer) trail with 659 feet (200 meters) of elevation gain. The trail is surrounded by some of the impressive landscapes of Chilean Patagonia, with views especially of Lake Nordenskjöld, the French Valley and the Paine Mountain Range.

A short distance up the trail it passes a beautiful cove on Lago Nordenskjöld (Nordenskjöld Lake). The short side trail to the beach is well worth the effort to see an amazing view of Lago Nordenskjöld and the peaks behind it.

Also along the trail you’ll see the Salto Grande waterfall, which falls between Lake Nordenskjöld and Lake Paine.

Finally at the end of the trail, you’ll reach Mirador los Cuernos, an overlook with one of the park’s best views of the Cuernos.

(3) Laguna Azul (Blue Lagoon) is also the site of one of the park’s campgrounds. You can drive right up to the lake at the edge of the campground and there is lots of parking plus restrooms available. Laguna Azul offers a nice view of the Torres (Towers), and has some small trees along the shore that offer an interesting contrast.

(4) Lago Grey (Grey Lake) and Grey Glacier are two closely related locations. Lago Grey is located on the Eastern side of the park, and is the home of the Hotel Lago Grey. The hotel is a nice, higher end hotel with several nice viewpoints of the lake and the glacier behind. The hotel is also the home of the Grey III, a boat that is used for three hour tours of the lake several times a day. The tours take you very close to the glacier and stops to see two of the major necks where you can see the mouth of the glacier.

Depending on the day you might see quite a few beautiful icebergs floating along Lago Grey.

There is also a nice little hike behind the hotel that goes to Grey Lake Viewpoint. The view point trail crosses a small bridge across the River Pingo and winds through a small section of forest to the viewpoint. The trail is 2.9 miles (4.6 kilometers) and gains 666 feet (202 meters) of elevation. The forest section is very pretty in the fall, and is well known as a place for birdwatchers and other nature lovers.

(5) The Explora Hotel overlook on Lago Pehoe is a very easy hike up some stairs to a boardwalk that yields some really amazing views. There are several different levels and viewpoints along the boardwalk area and the steps from the parking lot, so take your time and look around.

(6) The Mirador Rio Serrano (Serrano River Viewpoint) is easily accessible by car and gives a sweeping view of the Serrano River with an incredible view of the Paine Massif with Paine Grande and Los Cuernos behind it.

(7) Mirador Lago Nordenskjöld (Nordenskjöld Lake Viewpoint) is an easy 3.8 mile hike with 472 feet of vertical gain. This picturesque lake is framed by the dramatic peaks of the Paine Massif, making it a must-visit destination for photographers or tourists seeking awe-inspiring landscapes and unique wildlife encounters. The lake’s vivid turquoise waters are a result of glacial melt, creating an interesting contrast against the rugged mountain backdrop.

(8) The Mirador Laguna Amarga (Bitter Lake Viewpoint) is a viewpoint near Laguna Amarga, a lake outside the eastern edge of Torres del Paine National Park in Patagonia, Chile. The viewpoint offers views of the Torres del Paine mountains, especially on clear days. The lake is known for its bluish-green color and the white stromatolite (layered sedimentary formations created by microbial mats) formations on its shores.

(9) The Mirador Cascada Paine (Paine Waterfall Viewpoint) is located on the Paine River, on the road that connects Laguna Amarga and Laguna Azul. The Mirador is just a short walk from the parking lot. The river that feeds the waterfall comes from Lake Dickson, which is fed by the Dickson Glacier. If you’re lucky and it’s not cloudy, you will be able to see the Torres del Paine behind the cascades.

(10) The Hosteria Pehoe (Pehoe Hotel) is an amazing little hotel right on the shores of Lago Pehoe (Pehoe Lake). This hotel is just a little farther up the road past the Explora Hotel and also offers some great views of the lake and the surrounding peaks. Just before the turn for the hotel parking lot, you can pull off to the right for the trailhead for Mirador Condor. The pull off is a great spot for a view of the hotel, but you can also make the short 1.5 mile (2.4 kilometer) hike to Mirador Condor for even better views. Hosteria Pehoe was also where we stayed for our time in the park, and made a great jumping off point for all of our explorations. The featured image at the top of this post was also taken from the beach at Hosteria Pehoe.
